Our afternoon tour will start from Piazza Risorgimento and it will bring you to  Janiculum hill, Tiber island  and Trastevere. One of out off the beaten path tour, away from historic crowd-pleasers, a lesser-known sights and neighborhoods waiting to be discovered.  An “Apericena” in Trastevere awaits you after the tour.

THE JANICULUM

Rome is known as the city of seven hills, but actually Rome has more than that. Indeed, the Gianicolo (or Janiculum), the hill that affords the best view of Rome, is west of the Tiber and outside the ancient city, so it’s not counted among the ancient seven. Still, it’s close to the historic center, just above the Vatican and the Trastevere neighborhood — and the panorama (not to mention the silence) from the top takes your breath away. At noon, the quiet is momentarily broken by the single shot of a cannon, to mark the exact time, a tradition that dates back to December 1847. Besides a stunning view of Rome’s ancient landmarks, the Janiculum gives you a quick and slightly more modern history lesson on the Italian Risorgimento, the 19th-century movement (and wars) that unified modern Italy. Busts of the heroes are scattered along the pathways, and looming over everything is a gigantic statue of the great bearded hero Giuseppe Garibaldi on horseback. Other sights on the Janiculum include the church of San Pietro in Montorio, on what was formerly thought to be the site of St Peter’s crucifixion; a small shrine known as the Tempietto, designed by Donato Bramante, marks the supposed site of Peter’s death. The Janiculum also houses a Baroque fountain built by Pope Paul V in the late 17th century, the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola.

On Janiculum hillside lies one of the nicest residential neighborhood of Rome and, going down from the hill, we will cross it, going toward  Trastevere, one of Rome’s most charming areas with its homes bedecked with flower boxes and cobblestone streets giving it an ‘oldworld’ air. It is also a lively place with its many bars and restaurants.

TIBER ISLAND

Before enjoying Trastevere, we will have a stop at Tiber Island. This lovely island, located in the middle of the Tiber River, offers great views over the water during the day, but gains a whole new magical, fairytale-like quality at dusk or night time, when the only Roman bridge that has survived, Ponte Fabricio, is lit up. There is not much on the island itself except for a beautiful old church and a hospital, but the whole fun lies in the fact that visitors only have to walk ten steps to enter or leave this pretty, boat-shaped spot.

TRASTEVERE

Trastevere is a picturesque medieval area located on the west bank of the Tiber. The area escaped the grand developments which changed the face of central Rome, and is a charming place to wander, eat or relax. There are lovely lanes to explore, and it’s not too difficult to step off the main routes and escape the masses. There are also lots of stylish bars – most are fairly new, but still atmospheric. It’s a lovely area to wander in the soft dark of a Roman evening, with a more intimate feel than the palazzi-filled Centro Storico. The heart of Trastevere is Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, a pedestrian square piazza lined with restaurants and bars, faded palazzi, and the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Heading up the lane to the right of the church, you enter into the maze of narrow lanes at Trastevere’s heart. Plants scramble down walls from garden terraces, washing hangs out to dry, and chipped Virgin Marys look down from shrines on street corners. The streets close to the river and south of Viale Trastevere are much quieter and there are several unpretentious restaurants where you can enjoy a peaceful meal at an outdoors table. The church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is one of Rome’s more interesting churches.
